McAfee Launches World’s First AI-Powered Deepfake Detector in India

Advanced AI tools have made it convenient for cybercriminals to carry out highly convincing scams by cloning voices and manipulating authentic videos. They can make it appear as if someone you trust or a public figure said something different from what they actually said.

Global cybersecurity company McAfee on Wednesday launched the World's First Automatic and AI-powered deepfake Detector that claims to defend its users against such threats.

The McAfee Deepfake Detector is part of the suite of AI-powered products that the company has launched to combat the rising spate of AI-generated videos, deepfakes, AI scams, and misinformation.

How does it function?

Available as an opt-in feature, McAfee Deepfake Detector generates automatic alerts for users if AI-altered audio is detected in videos. It does not require manual video uploads to run and picks up audio automatically whenever an audio or video is played on the device.

It leverages the devices' Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on integrated devices to run most of the processing on the device itself for the user's privacy.

McAfee said that it does not record a user's audio and offers the option to disable audio detection completely. However, enabling on-device audio leads to faster detection and processing.

Pricing and Availability

The McAfee Deepfake Detector can only be used for English language detection for now on select Copilot+ PCs in India. As a standalone product, it is priced at Rs 499 while the McAfee+ security plan along with the Deepfake Detector is available at Rs 2,398.

This detector is compatible on select devices like the Microsoft Copilot Plus PC. The feature uses on-device AI processing to alert users of possible deepfake content.

McAfee has worked with renowned Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to deliver powerful AI-based deepfake detection capabilities to users in India.

McAfee Smart AI Hub

The McAfee Smart AI Hub also provides easy-to-use tools and interactive resources to help one learn how to detect and avoid AI-driven scams. Users can also submit suspicious videos for analysis by McAfee's Deepfake detector.

A recent McAfee research revealed that an average Indian encounters 4.7 deepfake videos online every day, and 66 per cent of Indians report that they or their known have fallen victim to deepfake video scams in the last one year. Over the years, these scams have become increasingly advanced and difficult to detect.
