Apple growers and traders in Kashmir protested against the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and “government inaction,” warning that produce worth over ₹10,000 crore was at risk.
Protests took place in Sopore (Baramulla) and Handwara (Kupwara), and fruit mandis across the Valley called for a two-day shutdown.
Zahoor Ahmad, state President of the Apple Farmers' Federation, appealed for arrangements to transport apple-laden vehicles to prevent losses.
Horticulture is considered the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and timely delivery is critical for perishable apples.
