From Floral Fountains To Road Repairs, NDMC Readies Lutyens' Delhi For BRICS Summit

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has drawn up an extensive civic preparedness plan for the upcoming BRICS Summit, with round-the-clock sanitation, tighter monitoring, road repairs and extensive beautification planned across the NDMC area.

Under the plan, 41 major roads have been divided into 14 circles, each headed by a nodal officer who will conduct daily inspections and ensure that civic issues are addressed promptly, NDMC Chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said on Monday.

The 18th BRICS Summit is an upcoming international summit of the BRICS nations comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and additional nations, scheduled to be hosted by India on 12-13 September 2026 as part of its BRICS chairmanship.

The council has identified 15 locations for floral boards, nine for flower fountains and 17 roundabouts for special illumination and beautification. Several other prominent locations have also been earmarked for focused cleaning and upkeep, though their details have not been disclosed for security reasons.

According to a statement, special sanitation arrangements, including additional staff and night-duty teams, will be in place from September 9 to 14.

Mechanical sweepers, scrubbers, manual sweeping teams, temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be deployed, while stray animals will also be removed from key areas.

The civic body will also work with hotels, resident welfare associations and market traders to maintain cleanliness and civic discipline in areas linked to the summit.

Horticulture teams will focus on seasonal flowers, landscaping, green corridors, brown patches, shrubs, floral boards and decorative planters to give prominent roads and public spaces a well-maintained appearance.

NDMC will also undertake repairs of potholes and footpaths, maintain railings and road signs, remove debris and ensure proper drainage. Public toilets in identified areas will be inspected regularly to keep them functional and clean.

The council will display BRICS branding on 154 digital screens and around 83 public and common toilet utilities as part of its publicity campaign.

Street lights and decorative illumination will be kept operational, with backup power and quick response teams to deal with electrical faults.

Special enforcement drives will target encroachments, unauthorised hoardings, unregulated street vending, construction activity and illegal parking, particularly along important and VIP movement routes.

The civic body will also deploy ambulances and medical teams at identified locations, inspect food establishments and step up mosquito-control measures. Drainage arrangements will be strengthened to deal with possible rain and waterlogging during the summit period.

“Dedicated nodal officers have also been appointed for events such as the BRICS Bazaar, BRICS Run & Ride, BRICS Murals & Painting and BRICS Food Festival,” NDMC said in a statement.

A 24x7 control room and command and control centre will monitor civic services through CCTV surveillance, field reports and inspections by senior officers.

Dwivedi said NDMC would coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, Delhi government, district authorities and other central agencies to ensure smooth arrangements.

He also urged market associations, RWAs and other stakeholders in the NDMC area to join the cleanliness and civic management efforts and help present a clean and welcoming face of the city to international visitors.

The comprehensive preparations are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted civic services and keeping New Delhi clean, green, safe and well-maintained during the summit, he said.
