Ceasefire to be phased in over 24 hours after US-led backchannel diplomacy; Iran confirms halt to military operations if Israel ends aggression.
US President Donald Trump has announced that the ceasefire between Israel and Iran came into effect now. He also urged both the parties not to violate it in a Truth Social post.
"The ceasefire is now in effect. Please do not violate it," Trump said.
On Monday, Trump claimed to mediate yet another “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He said that the US brokered ceasefire, will be phased in over 24 hours and aims to officially conclude what Trump labelled “THE 12 DAY WAR."
"CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE," Trump wrote.
"Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World," Trump explained.
In another post, Trump claimed that Israel and Iran reached out to him and, almost simultaneously, and said, “PEACE!” According to a Reuters report, Trump brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Iran through talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday while his team, including Vice President JD Vance, held talks with Tehran.
Trump made the announcement shortly after Iran launched missile strikes on a US military base in Qatar in retaliation to American airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. The US reported no casualties.
Meanwhile, Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has signalled the beginning of ceasefire on a X post. "The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4am. Together with all Iranians, I thank our brave Armed Forces who remain ready to defend our dear country until their last drop of blood, and who responded to any attack by the enemy until the very last minute,” he wrote.
Just an hour ago to his latest post, Araghchi informed that till then there was no "agreement" on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations. "However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards," he added. Furthermore, he clarified that the final decision on the cessation of Iran's military operations will be made later.
Following the ceasefire announcement, Qatar has reopened its airspace. Qatar Airways confirmed the move in a post on X, stating that its priority was to ensure passengers could return home or continue their onward journeys safely and smoothly.
