Amul has announced price hike by Rs 2 per litre across all its milk variants in the country with effect from May 1 (Thursday), the marketing federation which owns the popular dairy brand said in a statement on Thursday. This comes just a day after a similar announcement was made by its rival Mother Dairy .

The increase of Rs 2 per litre translates into a range of 3-4 per cent hike in MRP (maximum retail price) which is much lower than average food inflation, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) said in a release.

Following the increase, 500ml pouch of Amul Gold milk will now be available for Rs 34, while 'Shakti' variant of 500ml will cost Rs 31 in Gujarat, said the release.

The Anand, Gujarat based federation markets dairy products under the 'Amul' brand.

On April 29, Mother Dairy raised milk prices by up to Rs 2 per litre, effective from today. The increase in price is applicable to all variants of milk, including full cream, toned, double-toned and cow milk. The increase in procurement prices is due to the early onset of summer and heatwave conditions.

“This price revision has been necessitated to address the significant increase in procurement costs, which have gone up by Rs 4-5 per litre over the past few months,” a Mother Dairy spokesperson told the Mint.

The company introduced a similar hike in June last year, driven by a rise in input costs.
