US President Donald Trump, on May 11, hailed the ceasefire acknowledgement between India and Pakistan after four days of intense military exchange over the Pahalgam terror attack on social media platform, Truth Social. He added that continued engagement could have resulted in deaths of “millions of good and innocent people”.
In his social media post, he stated that he would increase trade with India and Pakistan, writing that he would work with them to find a solution to the Kashmir issue.
“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions. I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 11.
Hostilities Paused, Uncertainty Remains
In a special media briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire with effect from 5 pm (IST) on May 10. It was agreed between the two countries to stop all firing and military actions on land, air and sea.
"DGMO of Pakistan called India's DGMO at 3.35 pm. It was agreed between them that both sides will stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 5 pm (IST). Instructions given to both sides to give effect to this understanding. The DGMOs will talk again on May 12 at 12 pm," said Foreign Minister Vikram Misri.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's announcement followed soon after US President Donald Trump declared that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire, brokered through US-led mediation efforts.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump had initially announced the evening of May 10 that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire”.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the news through a post on X, writing, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always worked towards peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
However, Pakistan commenced another series of attacks just hours after acknowledging a ceasefire. The “breach of understanding” between the two countries condemned by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri last night, with Indian forces ordered to retaliate strongly.
According to CNBC TV18, Indian Army sources confirmed that shelling and drone activity from Pakistan had ceased. However, the situation remains highly volatile.
