India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, halting all military actions on land, in the air, and at sea. The ceasefire took effect at 5 PM IST on May 10, following three days of heightened tensions and military confrontation.
US President Donald Trump was the first to announce that both parties had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Trump also claimed that the US mediated peace talk between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
But just minutes before the announcement, news agencies, citing Indian defence sources, reported that India will now treat any future terrorist attacks as acts of war, not isolated incidents.
The latest round of escalation between India and Pakistan began after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terror sites in Pakistan and PoK. A day later, Pakistan fired across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir, causing casualties and further escalating tensions between the neighbours.
On May 9, Pakistan attempted to target Indian airbases and civilian sites along the border. The targets included Srinagar, Avantipora, and Udhampur, escalating cross-border hostilities. However, these attacks were swiftly neutralised by the Indian side.
The India military reportedly launched missiles targeting three Pakistani air bases on May 9 in response to Pakistan’s attacks on 26 locations across LoC overnight. The three key airbases that were struck by India’s retaliatory operation included the Nur Khan Air Base, the Murid Air Base in Chakwal, and the Rafiqui Air Base in Jhang district of Punjab province.
Meanwhile, the BSF also destroyed terrorist launchpad at Looni in Pakistan's Sialkot in response to unprovoked firing by other side, PTI reported.
By labeling terror attacks as acts of war, India has signaled zero tolerance and readiness for strong retaliation, reported The Economic Times. For now, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has said that the Indian and Pakistani Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) are scheduled for a meeting on May 12 at 12 PM.
