After the Supreme Court’s detrimental ruling in the AGR case, Tata Sons may put fresh capital into its debt-ridden telecom arm, Tata Teleservices. Tata Group’s telecom company has a negative net worth of Rs 17,876 crore and owes dues worth Rs 19,256 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) to the government. Tata Group’s holding company has issued a letter of comfort to introduce fresh capital, the Business Standard reported, citing sources.
The development comes just days after the top court rejected pleas filed by Indian telecom companies, including Tata Teleservices, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel. SC’s bench, comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan called the petition “misconceived”.
“We are really shocked by these petitions which have come before us. It is not expected of a multinational company. We will dismiss it,” the SC bench had said.
The telecom major had sought a waiver on paying interest, penalty, and interest on penalty as part of their AGR dues.
Prior to this, in January this year, the apex court had rejected the Tata Teleservices review petition jointly filed with other telecos against the Supreme Court’s 2021 AGR verdict.
Care Ratings had last year flagged the AGR-related liabilities after the expiry of a four-year moratorium in March 2026 for Tata Teleservices. The ratings agency mentioned that Tata Sons had infused Rs 46,595 crore into Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) until June 2019 and continued to issue a support letter to the firm.
Tata Teleservices recently posted its fourth-quarter results for the financial year 2024-25. The company’s loss declined to Rs 306.42 crore in Q4. Revenue from operations decreased by about 5% to Rs 308.27 crore in Q4 FY25 from Rs 323.29 crore in Q4 FY24.
The company’s dues stood at Rs 17,830 crore – Rs 3,367 crore under Tata Teleservices Maharashtra (TTML) and Rs 14,463 crore under Tata Teleservices (TTSL), as of March FY24. The dues increased to Rs 19,256 crore by Q4 FY25.
