OpenAI will cut prices for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% for developers for the next three months, according to a Reuters report. The move comes as the ChatGPT maker faces growing competition from Anthropic and Chinese AI models.

The price reduction applies to OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) and will also roll out across eligible plans for credits on its agentic AI product ChatGPT Work and coding tool Codex. However, prices for Pro, Plus and Business subscriptions will remain unchanged.

Under the revised pricing, GPT-5.6 Sol will cost $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens for standard short-context use. The earlier prices were $5 and $30, respectively.

How OpenAI’s New Pricing Compares

The latest reduction makes GPT-5.6 Sol cheaper than some of Anthropic’s frontier models. Anthropic lists its Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per 1 million input tokens and $50 per 1 million output tokens.

Its Claude Opus 5 model is priced at $5 per 1 million input tokens and $25 per 1 million output tokens, according to the pricing details cited in the report.

That puts OpenAI’s revised GPT-5.6 Sol pricing below both models on input and output costs for standard short-context use.

OpenAI Steps Up Model Price Cuts

The GPT-5.6 Sol reduction is the latest in a series of price cuts by OpenAI as businesses and developers weigh the cost of using AI models.

OpenAI also cut prices for smaller models late last month. The company reduced the price of its mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20%, while its lower-cost Luna model received an 80% price cut.

The latest reductions are focused on API pricing and eligible credits rather than consumer subscriptions. OpenAI said the new GPT-5.6 Sol prices will apply for the next three months, while Pro, Plus and Business subscription prices will stay unchanged.
