IMD Sounds Heatwave Red Alert as Delhi ‘Feels Like’ 52 degrees Celsius

IMD has issued a heatwave red alert for Delhi as severe heat has shrouded the city. Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are also on heatwave ‘red alert' today. IMD predicted that heatwave conditions are likely over northwest India including the western Himalayan region till June 13.

Besides this, an orange alert for heatwave conditions is in place for Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Karnataka and parts of coastal Maharashtra are on red alert for heavy rains, reported Mint.

Amid soaring heat index and heatwave red alert for Delhi, the regional Meteorological Centre predicted partly cloudy skies with light rain, thunderstorm, lightening and gusty winds. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above the normal of 39.9 degrees Celsius.

 “Hot & humid weather is likely to prevail over Bihar, Assam & Meghalaya on 12th….Warm night conditions very likely in isolated pockets over. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh on 12th June," IMD stated.

 “Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana during 12th-15th June with very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu Puducherry & Karaikal during 12th-17th; Kerala & Mahe on 12th & 13th, Karnataka” until June 17.

In addition, extremely heavy precipitation is likely in Kerala between June 14 and 16, in Tamil Nadu on June 14 and 15 and in Goa until June 14.

Heavy Rain Predicted for Karnataka Till June 17

Contrary to the Northern Belt, Bengaluru is experiencing constant rain leading to massive waterlogging and a flood-like situation in several parts of the state, particularly in the Hubbali area of Dharwad.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day warning in Karnataka, anticipating ‘widespread’ rainfall till June 17.

Bengaluru is on a yellow alert for heavy rain on June 12, according to IMD. Meanwhile, south interior Karnataka is expected to experience “fairly widespread” rainfall until June 14, which will then intensify to “widespread” rain for the subsequent three days.

According to Bengaluru Meteorological Centre, heavy rainfall is likely in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Ballari, Bengaluru (Rural), Bengaluru (Urban), Chikkaballapura, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Davangere, Hassan and Vijayanagar districts. Wet spells are expected to continue in the region in the coming five days, according to a  June 11 weather report, reported Mint.
