Operation Sindoor

On 11 May 2025, a day after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, the Indian Armed Forces conducted a joint press briefing on Operation Sindoor, outlining the precise strikes in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and Pakistan, their methodology, the terrorists eliminated and the operation’s objectives.

Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, director general of military operations (DGMO), Air Marshal A K Bharti, director general of air operations, and Vice Admiral A N Pramod, director general of naval operations, addressed the briefing, detailing the operation’s success and its response to the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack.

In the air domain, DGMO Lieutenant General Ghai characterised the three–to–four-day aerial engagements with Pakistan as “no less than a war,” noting that such direct air-to-air strikes are unprecedented under normal circumstances. He warned of Pakistani Army–backed infiltration attempts along the Line of Control and emphasised that India had been “compelled” into this situation but possesses a clear roadmap and is prepared to execute it “diligently” and decisively.

Acknowledging the human cost, Lt Gen Ghai paid solemn homage to five fallen Indian service members and civilian casualties, pledging that their sacrifices “shall always be remembered.” He asserted that India’s actions have been “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” but any further threats to sovereignty will be met with “decisive force.”

Air Marshal Bharti showcased extensive footage depicting the impact of India’s precision air strikes on multiple Pakistani radar installations and airfields, Pasrur, Chunian, Arifwala, Sargodha, Rahim Yar Khan, Chaklala, Sukkur, Bholari and Jacobabad, affirming that India had “decimated” terrorist camps and achieved its objectives with measurable success. He further confirmed losses inflicted on Pakistani aircraft, while all Indian pilots have safely returned.

In the maritime sphere, Vice Admiral Pramod described rapid deployment of the Navy’s carrier battle group, surface ships, submarines and aviation assets within 96 hours of the 22 April attack. Operating in the northern Arabian Sea, Indian forces refined tactics through live weapon firings, maintained a deterrent posture and constrained Pakistani naval and air units to defensive-harbour positions.

Finally, the leaders detailed repeated drone incursions on 8–10 May, which were foiled without damage, and the integrated deployment of air-defence and electronic-warfare assets. They noted a de-escalation following a DGMO-to-DGMO hotline agreement brokered by foreign secretary Vikram Misri to suspend military actions on land, sea and air.
