US President Donald Trump said on June 17 that he is looking forward to a “real end” to the conflict between arch-rivals Israel and Iran and not just a ceasefire, reported AFP.
After reaching US from a G7 summit in Canada, Trump told reporters, “I’m not looking for a ceasefire, we’re looking at better than a ceasefire.” The president added that he was aiming for “an end, a real end, not a ceasefire,” adding that he wanted a “complete give-up” by Iran.
Not Up for Peace Talks
Trump also posted on Truth Social that he had not reached out to Iran for peace talks in any “way, shape or form”. He added, “If they want to talk, they know how to reach me. They should have taken the deal that was on the table - Would have saved a lot of lives!!!”
Commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that his early departure from the G7 summit in Canada was linked to ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Iran, Trump said Macron “has no idea” why he was returning to Washington and insisted the reason was “much bigger” than any ceasefire effort.
“Publicity-seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to DC to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong!” Trump wrote on Tuesday, shortly after boarding Air Force One. “Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!”
As per reports, Trump has not clarified the exact reason behind his sudden exit from the G7 summit. However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested in a June 17 post on X that his departure was triggered by developments in the Middle East.
Leavitt described Trump’s day at the summit as “productive” in a post on X, underscoring the signing of a major trade agreement with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. She added that Trump had returned to Washington to address “what’s going on in the Middle East”.
