India's Gaming Industry Tops Bollywood, Cricket in Revenue: Lumikai's Salone Sehgal

Gaming in India has grown to about $3.8 billion revenue, which is twice as high as Bollywood and even bigger than cricket, said Salone Sehgal, founder and general partner, Lumikai.

She was speaking at a panel discussion on the Indian gaming industry during the Startup Mahakumbh in New Delhi on Saturday.

Salone said that India’s gaming industry is a fast growing market which has transformed from just a past time to creating jobs and professional athletes.

“Gaming as an industry is very new which has taken on even very entrenched religions, which is Bollywood and cricket for us as Indians,” she said.

India is the second largest mobile gaming market in the world as an average Indian spends about 10 to 13 hours playing games and spending time on entertainment, consuming 13 GB of data in a month.

“It (gaming) is not just an entertainment or past time. We are seeing it as an industry where jobs are being created, esports emerging. Esports is a medal sports, we see professional athletes and influencers being created around it. Gaming is one of the country’s fastest growing industry with a CAGR rate of 20% year on year.

According to a report by Lumikai, India’s gaming industry is set to grow to $9.2 billion by FY29.
