Apart from saddling people with a lot more responsibility, he would also be relentless in following up. He had given Bagchi the responsibility of heading the quality initiative at Wipro. Since he had no clue about Six Sigma, Bagchi asked him for some time to figure it out. He would follow up with Bagchi every other day asking whether he had figured it out. Slightly ticked off, Bagchi once responded, “Mr Premji, if you have figured it out, tell me. I will implement it or you can get a quality expert to do it. If either is not an option, then give me time to figure it out.” Premji calmly heard him out and said, “Look, it is my job to push and your job is to tell me your limit and push back.” I think that was phenomenal,” says Bagchi.
