Sanjog Gupta, currently CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at JioStar, becomes the seventh Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on July 7. He succeeds Geoff Allardice, who held the role permanently since 2021 after serving as interim CEO from 2020.
"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as the CEO of the ICC. He brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable to the ICC," said Jay Shah, ICC Chairman, in a statement.
Gupta began his journey as a journalist and joined Star India (now JioStar) in 2010. Rising through content and strategy roles, he became Head of Sports in 2020. He drove growth through multi-language, digital-first, and women-focused sports coverage, ensuring scale and operational efficiency.
Gupta was appointed following what the International Cricket Council (ICC) described as a "global recruitment process" launched in March. The position drew more than 2,500 applications from 25 countries, highlighting its global importance. Applicants included leaders from sports governing bodies and senior executives from various industries.
The ICC shortlisted 12 candidates, with a nominations committee led by top cricket officials overseeing the next stage. After unanimous recommendation, Sanjog Gupta’s appointment was approved by Jay Shah and ratified by the full ICC Board.
Calling it a privilege, Gupta said cricket is set for unprecedented growth, backed by nearly 2 billion fans. He highlighted rising commercial opportunities, the women’s game, Olympic inclusion in 2028 and tech adoption as key global drivers.
The ICC credited Gupta for transforming sports broadcasting in India and globally. He was key to the growth of major cricket properties like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC events, helped establish leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) and Indian Super League (ISL), and boosted global audiences for events such as the English Premier League and Wimbledon.
Appointed as CEO of JioStar Sports in November 2024, Gupta will step down on July 7, 2025, the same day he assumes office as ICC Chief Executive, bringing his strategic vision and innovation to global cricket.
