OpenAI to Acquire AI Coding Platform Windsurf for $3Bn

OpenAI has agreed to acquire Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool previously known as Codeium, for approximately $3 bn, Bloomberg reported.

The acquisition could enable OpenAI to compete in the market for AI-driven coding assistants that perform tasks such as generating code from natural-language prompts.

This follows earlier rumours suggesting that OpenAI was “in talks” to acquire Windsurf. Upon completion of the acquisition, OpenAI will compete with coding platforms such as Cursor, Lovable, Vercel’s v0, Replit and others.

Windsurf, formerly known as Exafunction Inc., had recently been in discussions with investors including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst to raise funds at a $3 bn valuation. Last year General Catalyst led a funding round that valued the company at $1.25 bn.

OpenAI competitor Anthropic and Microsoft-owned GitHub both offer AI tools for programmers such as Anthropic’s Claude models and GitHub’s Copilot. Additionally, investors are backing a new wave of companies providing similar AI-driven coding technologies, including Anysphere, the developer of Cursor.

Anysphere, the parent company of Cursor, recently secured $900 m in funding from Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Accel Ventures, valuing the company at approximately $9 bn, according to the Financial Times. This follows a $105 m raise in January 2025 at a $2.5 bn valuation, reflecting the surging demand for AI-powered coding tools.

The recent $900 m funding round is expected to more than triple Anysphere’s valuation to $9 bn.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has focused on integrating advanced coding tools for users into its platforms. OpenAI announced that its newly released o3 and o4-mini models outperform their predecessors in benchmark tests — producing 20 % fewer serious errors than the o1 model, as validated by external experts.

Apple–Anthropic Coding Platform

Apple Inc. is developing a new “vibe-coding” software platform in collaboration with Anthropic PBC, which will utilise AI to write, revise and test code for programmers, Bloomberg reported.

The platform is reportedly an enhanced version of Xcode, Apple’s programming environment that integrates Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model. Apple plans to deploy the software internally and has not yet decided whether to make it publicly available.

Vibe coding is an approach that utilises large-language models (LLMs) to generate code from natural-language prompts, eliminating the need for manual coding.

This initiative demonstrates Apple’s use of AI to streamline internal workflows and accelerate and modernise product development. The strategy aligns with those of companies like Windsurf and Anysphere, the creator of Cursor, both of which provide advanced AI-powered coding assistants widely used by developers.
