The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Risks Report 2025, identified armed conflict and climate change as critical global threats, followed by other pressing risks demanding immediate action. Escalating armed conflict and extreme weather events driven by climate change are seen as the most urgent threats facing the global economy in 2025.

The report, published on January 16, surveyed over 900 global risk experts, policymakers and industry leaders to record the risks that they consider most concerning. According to the findings, 23% of respondents identified state-based armed conflict as “the most pressing immediate global risk for 2025”. Another 14% expressed concern about extreme weather events, which have become more destructive due to climate change, citing devastating wildfires in Los Angeles as a recent example.

Extreme weather events remain the top concern for the next decade, with other significant risks including biodiversity loss, critical changes to the Earth’s systems and a shortage of natural resources. Misinformation and disinformation continue to be the leading global risk for the second consecutive year. Other immediate risks identified include societal polarisation, cyber-espionage and warfare.

The report emphasises that the world is entering a decisive decade, where effective global cooperation is important for navigating the ongoing crises.

India’s Focus at WEF 2025

The WEF’s annual meeting of world leaders is scheduled to take place from January 20 to 24 in Davos under the theme, "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age". India’s Commerce Ministry, in a release issued on January 10, confirmed India’s intention to reinforce its position in driving innovation and global cooperation.

India plans to showcase its advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability and global partnerships at the forum. The country will focus on five key workstreams defined by WEF at the forum—reimagining growth, investing in people, rebuilding trust, industries in the intelligent age and safeguarding the planet.

Amid global challenges such as armed conflict, climate change, food security and economic inequality, India’s delegation will present a comprehensive approach to these issues. Several Indian companies will also set up lounges to showcase their products and innovations, reflecting the country's growing prominence in the global business landscape.
