India Can Build AI Model At Fraction Of Cost, Just Like Chandrayaan: Vaishnaw

According to the data, India’s moon mission ‘Chandrayaan-3’ project had an estimated cost lower than Rs 600 core, which is lower than the budget of some of the hollywood films too

Indian entrepreneurs and researchers have the capability to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) models at a fraction of the cost compared to other nations, similar to India's moon mission, stated Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a conversation with Sam Altman during his visit to Delhi on February 5.

Vaishnaw said, “"Our country sent a mission to the moon at a fraction of the cost that many other countries do, right? Why can't we do a model which will be a fraction of the cost, that many other countries do.

The Union Minister also showed the possibility to collaborate in the entire AI stack- GPUs, apps and models with OpenAI as it provides an efficient data set that will help India to build its AI model incorporating cultural and linguistic nuances.

Vaishnaw also called India a quick adopter of technology, hence the data set provided by all the existing AI models will assist India to build our model incorporating cultural nuances.

After a fireside chat, the Union Minister along with the CEO, OpenAI met Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who reiterated one of the objectives of India’s AI mission is to ‘democratise technology’.

Vaishnaw posted on X, PM @narendramodi Ji guides us to democratise technology. Sam appreciated the PM's vision.

In the conversation with Vaishnaw, CEO OpenAI said, “India is an incredibly important market for AI in general, for open AI in particular, it's our second biggest market. Tripled users here in the last year, but mostly seeing what people in India are building with AI at all levels of the stack, chips, models, you know, all of the incredible applications.”

Asked about his advice, as India looks to have a global voice in AI and take a leadership position, Altman said "it seems to me like it's working".

With the global tech landscape becoming increasingly dynamic, India is fortifying its sovereign interests with its own AI model.

According to Altman, India should take the lead in the AI race. "AI models are still expensive, but they are achievable. India must position itself as a leader in this space," he told the gathering.
