Rains and Thunderstorms Claim 47 Lives in Bihar, UP: IMD Warns of More to Come

Heavy rains and thunderstorms across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have left 47 dead, with the IMD forecasting continued severe weather in the coming days

At least 25 people were killed in lightning strikes and hailstorms in several districts of Bihar on April 10, reported PTI.

Nalanda reported 18 deaths, while two deaths were reported in Siwan and one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Jehanabad, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, however, claimed in a post on X that over 50 people died on April 10.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of more than 50 people in various incidents of storm, rain, lightning, tree and wall collapse in Bihar. I express my deepest condolences. May God provide strength to the families affected by the disaster in this hour of grief,” he shared.

He urged the state government to provide ‘proper’ compensation to all affected families. He also demanded the government to compensate the farmers for their crop loss due to the sudden rain.

Earlier, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar condoled the deaths and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.

On Wednesday, 13 people had died in lightning strikes in four districts of Bihar.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for a number of districts in Bihar that could receive heavy rainfall. The districts on alert include Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada and Patna.

It has also forecast heavy rainfall on April 11 and April 12 in these districts.

The met department has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds between 40 kmph to 50 kmph in Madhubani, Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada and Patna.

In Uttar Pradesh, at least 22 deaths were reported due to rain and thunderstorm on April 10, according to The Indian Express. Fatehpur and Azamgarh reported three deaths each, while two deaths each occurred in Firozabad, Kanpur Dehat, and Sitapur. One death each was reported in Ghazipur, Gonda, Amethi, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharthnagar, Ballia, Kannauj, Barabanki, Jaunpur, and Unnao, reported India Today.

IMD has predicted more thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40 kmph to 50 kmph in some areas of Uttar Pradesh on April 11.
