National Human Rights Commission

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently convened a core advisory group meeting in New Delhi on December 17 to explore the link between climate change and human rights. The meeting, held in hybrid mode, focused on the theme 'Climate Change and Human Rights'.

NHRC's acting chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani emphasised that climate change is impacting vulnerable communities, particularly tribal people whose traditional livelihoods are directly tied to the environment.

Some of the suggestions from the discussion, according to a senior official, included collecting district-level climate change data to understand its impact and collaborating with local communities to develop sustainable solutions.

Other suggestions included promoting research on the causes and effects of climate change on migration from rural to urban areas in India and identifying climate-prone areas to create a "climate-risk atlas" to mitigate potential impacts.

The Commission said that it will further deliberate on the various suggestions to finalise its recommendations to be sent to the government on addressing various challenges aggravated by climate change.
