Addressing counterparts from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, during the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting held under Brazil’s presidency on May 19, India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal emphasised that fossil fuels will continue to play a crucial role in the global energy mix—particularly for developing nations—and called for international cooperation to ensure their cleaner and more efficient use through advanced technologies.

Balancing Energy Mix Goals

The meeting, held on May 19 in Brasília, focused on the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.” India positioned itself as a committed player in driving a balanced energy transition, with Lal underscoring energy access, affordability and security as critical pillars for global development.

As stated by the Ministry of Power, India has achieved a range of clean energy achievements. These include a 90% increase in electricity capacity over the last decade, reaching 475 GW as of 2025 and an ambitious target of 900 GW by 2032. India has emerged as the third-largest producer of solar and wind energy globally. Notable milestones include 20% ethanol blending, rapid progress in green hydrogen initiatives, and a goal to scale nuclear energy capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

India’s transition also involves deep investments in smart grids, the Green Energy Corridor, and the creation of a domestic Carbon Credit Market. Through these initiatives, India not only addresses its energy demands but also paves the way for economic growth, green job creation, and reduced carbon intensity.

The BRICS communique echoed India's priorities by reaffirming commitments to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7—ensuring universal energy access and reducing energy poverty. The ministers emphasized technological neutrality, advocated for diversified energy sources, and supported the role of local currencies and concessional financing in cross-border energy trade.

India will host the next BRICS energy gathering in 2026. Lal extended an official invitation during the meeting, reaffirming the country’s leadership role in shaping the Global South’s energy agenda.
