A cloudburst led to flash floods in the upper catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, leading to  devastating floods river in Dharali village in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on August 5, 2025, with several houses being damaged or swept away in the raging waters.

According to The Hindu, the flooding due to cloudburst claimed four lives, with many feared to have been washed away. A team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel has been sent to the spot to undertake rescue operations.

Disaster Response Underway

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Kumar Dhami wrote on X, “Teams from the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF and district administration are working on relief and rescue efforts in the impacted areas of Dharali (Uttarkashi). Priority is being given to moving people to safe areas, and the situation is being watched closely. The administration is still on high alert and is helping the impacted citizens in every way it can.”

Confirming the deaths of four people in the flash flood that struck Dharali village, Uttarkashi district magistrate Prashant Arya told TOI, “A massive wave of flash flood hit the area. We are currently assessing the extent of damage to life and property.”

He further added that the affected areas include several small guest houses, hotels and restaurants.

“Keeping that in mind, we have dispatched rescue teams accordingly. Teams from the tehsil and Public Works Department (PWD) have already reached the site,” he added.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the damage caused in the affected region.

“A massive mudslide struck #Dharali village in the #KheerGad area near Harsil, triggering sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement,” the Surya Command of the Indian Army wrote on X.

“Troops of #Ibexbrigade were immediately mobilised and have reached the affected site to assess the situation and undertake rescue operations. Extent of damage is being ascertained and updates will follow as relief operations unfold. The Army stands resolute in support of our citizens during this natural calamity,” it added.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places across Uttarakhand until August 10.
