Vikram Misri is a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer. He currently serves as the 35th Foreign Secretary of India, heading the country’s diplomatic and foreign policy operations.
Born in Srinagar in 1964, Vikram Misri pursued his early education at Burn Hall School and Carmel Convent in Jammu and Kashmir. He later attended The Scindia School in Gwalior, earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi and completed an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur.
After a brief stint in advertising, Misri joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1989. He served in various capacities in Indian missions abroad, including Brussels and Tunis and held significant roles in the Ministry of External Affairs.
Misri served as the Private Secretary to three Indian Prime Ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. His close work with top leadership provided him with deep insights into India’s foreign policy and administrative functions.
He held ambassadorial positions in Spain, Myanmar and notably China. During his tenure in China (2019–2021), he managed diplomatic relations amid the 2020–2021 border standoff, engaging in critical negotiations to de-escalate tensions as reported by Mint.
From January 2022 to July 2024, Misri served as India’s Deputy National Security Advisor. In this role, he contributed to shaping India’s strategic and security policies, addressing complex national and international challenges
On July 15, 2024, Vikram Misri was appointed as the 35th Foreign Secretary of India. His vast experience and diplomatic acumen positioned him to lead India’s foreign affairs during a period of significant global and regional developments.
As Foreign Secretary, Misri played a pivotal role in briefing the media on Operation Sindoor and announcing the India-Pakistan ceasefire understanding. His calm and professional demeanour during the press conference was noted, even as it attracted criticism from certain quarters.
