The government will soon roll out Bharat Taxi, a national ride-hailing app designed to give commercial vehicle drivers an independent option instead of depending solely on private mobility platforms in India.
The platform aims to lessen drivers’ dependence on private ride-hailing firms such as Uber, Ola and Rapido by introducing a cooperative-run model that emphasises driver control, clearer processes and fair opportunities within the mobility ecosystem.
Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha in a written response on 2 December that Bharat Taxi has been developed to ensure drivers gain greater control over their daily work.
Bharat Taxi will be managed by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Ltd, a multi-state cooperative registered under the MSCS Act 2002 and operates without any government stake, allowing drivers complete cooperative-led control of the platform.
The cooperative has already enrolled over 51,000 drivers from New Delhi and Saurashtra, positioning it as the world’s first national mobility cooperative fully owned by driver-members during its beta stage.
The platform will include easy mobile booking, clear fare display, multilingual options, real-time vehicle tracking and continuous customer assistance to improve transparency, accessibility and overall user experience for passengers.
The app provides secure onboarding for passengers and drivers through technology-supported verification, along with an enhanced safety framework developed in partnership with Delhi Police to ensure dependable travel.
The Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, established on 6 June 2025, is financed by eight major cooperatives including NCDC, IFFCO, GCMMF, NABARD, NDDB, NCEL and Kribhco and operates entirely without government funding.
