Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16 to attend the G7 Summit, where he will engage with world leaders on key global challenges including energy security, technology and innovation.
The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal bloc of major advanced economies — France, the US, the UK, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and the EU. Members meet annually to address global economic and geopolitical challenges.
The June 16–17 Kananaskis gathering marks PM Modi’s sixth consecutive G7 Summit. This visit to Canada is the second stop in his three-nation tour, which also includes Cyprus and Croatia.
India hopes the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit will help rebuild ties. Describing both countries as ‘vibrant democracies,’ the external affairs ministry sees this as a key moment for open dialogue and a fresh direction.
Prime Minister Modi will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. These come just over a month after India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks .
The G7 Summit is taking place against a backdrop of rising global tensions — including escalating conflict between Iran and Israel and a trade war sparked by US President Trump’s tariff-driven policies.
