On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III—Cyprus’s highest civilian honour. He dedicated this award to India’s 1.4 billion citizens.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred the Order of Makarios III—named after the nation’s first president—on PM Modi, recognising his global leadership and strengthening of India–Cyprus ties.
PM Modi dedicated the prestigious award to India’s 1.4 billion citizens, calling it a tribute to the enduring and trusted friendship between India and Cyprus.
"I am confident that in the time to come, our active partnership will touch new heights. Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards building a peaceful and secure world," the Prime Minister said.
''The award was described as a symbol of the strong diplomatic ties between India and Cyprus and of their shared commitment to global peace, progress and prosperity,'' The Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Cyprus marks only the third by an Indian PM and the first since 2002, highlighting renewed diplomatic engagement between the two nations after over two decades.
Narendra Modi also began his three-nation tour with a stop in Cyprus. His next destinations include Canada for the G7 summit and then Croatia.
