WhatsApp is preparing to introduce usernames that will allow users to connect without sharing phone numbers. The privacy-focused feature is currently being tested with select Android and iOS users before a wider rollout begins.
The feature works similarly to username systems already available on Telegram and Instagram. Instead of sharing mobile numbers, users will be able to connect through unique handles created directly inside the WhatsApp application.
Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to create a username through WhatsApp’s Settings menu. When someone starts a chat using the username, only the handle will appear instead of the linked mobile number.
WhatsApp said the usernames feature will remain optional for users. People who prefer the current phone-number-based system will still be able to continue using the messaging platform without making any account-related changes.
According to a report by The Indian Express, each WhatsApp account will support only one username at a time. However, users may later change their usernames without affecting existing chats, groups or overall account activity on the platform.
Meanwhile, the company is also introducing rules to reduce impersonation, scams and confusing usernames. Reports suggest usernames must contain at least one letter and remain between three and 35 characters long.
Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores will reportedly be allowed in usernames. WhatsApp will also block handles beginning with “www,” ending with website-style domains or containing repeated periods to avoid misuse.
The update aims to help users safely communicate with unfamiliar contacts, businesses, buyers, sellers and large community groups without exposing personal phone numbers during conversations on the messaging platform.
Phone numbers will still remain linked to WhatsApp accounts for verification and recovery purposes. As per reports, the company has not confirmed a launch date while wider availability is expected later in 2026.
