Tech Giant Google has introduced a fresh set of updates to Google Gemini to strengthen access to mental health support. The upgrade focuses on spotting signs of emotional distress in conversations and directing users to trusted help resources when required.
The update enables Google Gemini to identify when a user may be facing emotional difficulties. By analysing conversation patterns, it responds with a focus on support and guides users towards suitable mental health assistance options available to them.
Google Gemini now highlights a clear “Help is available” prompt when it detects emotional distress in conversations. This update ensures users can quickly access verified mental health resources, making it easier to get immediate support without leaving the chat.
In critical cases, such as indications of self-harm or suicidal thoughts, Google Gemini provides a one-tap option to connect directly with crisis helplines. Users can call, text or chat, with the option staying visible throughout the conversation.
Google noted that its philanthropic arm, Google.org, will provide $30mn in funding over the next three years. The aim is to help crisis helplines broaden their reach and enhance response capacity.
Meanwhile, the company is also increasing its partnership with ReflexAI, providing $4 mn in funding. Gemini will be integrated into ReflexAI’s tools to enhance training platforms used by organisations managing sensitive mental health conversations.
Google has refined Google Gemini to handle mental health conversations responsibly. It avoids promoting harmful behaviour or false beliefs and instead guides users towards verified information and professional support whenever needed.
The company emphasised it has introduced safeguards specifically for younger users. These include restrictions to ensure responses remain appropriate and do not expose users to harmful or sensitive topics during their interactions with the chatbot.
