Shailesh Chandra has been appointed as the new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of Tata Motors. He will take charge for three years starting October 1, 2025, focusing on passenger vehicles and fast-growing electric mobility.
Chandra, currently joint MD of passenger vehicles and passenger electric mobility, has been with Tata Motors since 1995, starting as a production manager before moving across several leadership roles.
Between 2013 and 2016, Chandra worked at Tata Sons in the group chairman’s office, first as general manager of group strategy and later as assistant vice president (VP).
Chandra rejoined Tata Motors in 2016 as head of corporate strategy and business transformation, later becoming president of the passenger vehicle and electric mobility units, leading Tata’s electrification drive.
He also serves as a non-executive director at Tata Technologies and Fiat India Automobiles, while holding international board positions in Italy and the United Kingdom.
Chandra holds a mechanical engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University and an executive MBA from SP Jain Institute of Management and Research.
Meanwhile, under Tata Motors ongoing restructuring, Girish Wagh, currently executive director (ED) and key managerial personnel, will step down on October 1 to take charge as MD and CEO of the newly formed TML Commercial Vehicles Limited.
On the other hand, PB Balaji, Tata Motors’ group chief financial officer (CFO) and key managerial personnel, will step down on November 17 to become CEO of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in the United Kingdom. He will also join the boards of Tata Motors and TML Commercial Vehicles Limited as a non-executive director.
