Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) announced on wednesday that Tarun Garg, currently the Chief Operating Officer (CEO), will assume charge as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer(CEO) from January 1, 2026.
Garg’s appointment makes him the first Indian MD & CEO of HMIL since the company began operations in 1996. Meanwhile, Current MD Unsoo Kim will return to South Korea for a strategic role at Hyundai Motor Company by December 31, 2025.
Until January 1, 2026, Tarun Garg will serve as MD & CEO Designate. The transition is subject to shareholder approval. HMIL also acknowledged Unsoo Kim’s valuable contributions and leadership during his tenure with the company.
Garg is a mechanical engineer from Delhi Technological University and holds an MBA from IIM Lucknow. With over three decades in the automobile industry, he brings deep experience and insight to lead Hyundai India’s operations effectively.
Prior to joining HMIL, Garg built an extensive career at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, progressing from a management trainee to senior leadership roles such as Regional Sales Manager, Commercial Business Head, and Executive Director overseeing Marketing and Logistics.
At Hyundai, Garg has enhanced the company’s market presence and profitability by leading initiatives in digital marketing, developing premium channels, expanding into rural markets, and growing the used-car segment across India.
Garg also led the introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in nine Hyundai models, improving sales quality, profit margins, and customer satisfaction, while ensuring business growth aligned with brand value enhancement and stronger market competitiveness.
Garg’s appointment supports Hyundai’s long-term strategy to strengthen its India operations and accelerate the shift toward smart mobility solutions, said the company. His leadership is expected to drive innovation, strategic growth, and future-ready initiatives across the country.
