India has become the world’s second-largest market for Claude.ai usage, trailing only the US, according to Anthropic’s Economic Index report released on January 15.
Claude.ai adoption is largely limited to a handful of countries, such as the US, Japan, the UK, South Korea and India, showing focused growth in AI-driven work.
Nearly half of Claude.ai use in India is tied to technical tasks, with 45.2% focused on computer and mathematical work, emphasising AI’s role in software development.
According to Anthropic, five of India’s top ten Claude.ai use cases fall under software and web development, showing developers increasingly rely on AI for coding, debugging and routine tasks.
Indian Claude.ai users are highly engaged in CSS, HTML and UI styling, as per the report, being 1.7 times more likely to work on web applications.
India shows higher-than-average AI adoption for chatbots, workflow automation, database management and data engineering, with the report also showing usage 1.4 to 1.5 times above the global baseline.
Claude.ai also aids Indian users in professional growth, job searching, academic work across STEM subjects and business planning, highlighting diverse applications beyond software development.
Despite high overall usage, India’s Claude.ai intensity is low relative to its working-age population, scoring 0.22 on Anthropic’s AI Usage Index, indicating underrepresentation compared to population size.
