To investigate the development of a low carbon steel manufacturing process, Tata Steel has teamed up with the German SMS business. According to the MoU, both businesses will conduct additional technical conversations and take steps to produce a joint industrial demonstration of the EASyMelt technology created by SMS group.
"The demonstration will be executed at E Blast Furnace in Tata Steel's Jamshedpur plant with an objective to reduce CO2 emission by more than 50 per cent from blast furnace’s baseline operation," it said.
Iron production can be accelerated by the use of the EASyMelt (electric-assisted syngas smelter) technology in integrated steel plants that are already in operation.

Further, India being the second largest steel producer in the world also places a huge responsibility on large manufacturers like Tata Steel to lead the country’s decarbonisation journey."
According to him, Tata Steel plans to advance this partnership by working more closely with other parties to acquire improved technology and procedures for consistently and significantly reducing carbon emissions. Decarbonisation is a top priority for Tata Steel, which has a target of attaining net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
