MediaTek Launches Dimensity 8450 Chipset for Premium Segment, to Power OPPO's Reno 14 Pro

While MediaTek has traditionally focused on the mid-range market, its recent launches signal a clear push into the high-end segment. During the launch, one of the company's executives noted that MediaTek has managed to lead the industry for nearly 20 consecutive quarters

Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek on Friday launched its latest chipset, the Dimensity 8450, for the premium 5G smartphone segment at an event in New Delhi. MediaTek, which dominates India's smartphone industry across flagship, premium, and entry-level devices, will debut this new chipset in OPPO’s Reno 14 Pro. Additionally, OPPO will also use the Dimensity 8450 in its upcoming K-series models.

MediaTek maintains a strong foothold in India’s smartphone System-on-Chip (SoC) market with its Dimensity 9000, 8000, 7000, and 6000 series, particularly in the sub-₹30,000 segment, where it holds a dominant share of over 60% in the 5G category, according to recent data from Counterpoint. However, the premium smartphone segment—especially above ₹30,000—continues to be led by Qualcomm, which holds a significant share of around 35%.

While MediaTek has traditionally focused on the mid-range market, its recent launches signal a clear push into the high-end segment. During the launch, one of the company's executives noted that MediaTek has managed to lead the industry for nearly 20 consecutive quarters.

What Does the New Dimensity 8450 Offer?

According to the company, the MediaTek Dimensity 8450 delivers up to 30% faster performance than competing platforms. It features an all “Big Core” CPU design, using eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores and an Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU—ideal for intensive tasks like gaming, video editing, and multitasking, all while optimising power efficiency.

“People thought smartphones needed smaller CPUs to save power,” said Thomas Ho, Senior Product Manager at MediaTek. “But at MediaTek, we've developed a chip with a large CPU core, capable of completing tasks quickly and efficiently. When tasks are done faster, the system spends less time in active states, thereby conserving energy. That’s the secret behind our performance advantage—it’s all about smarter power management.”

He further added that the Dimensity 8450 features a new K725 CPU core, an upgrade over the previous A720, offering improved performance and battery efficiency. The chip comes with an enhanced cache system—6MB L3 and 5MB system-level cache—for faster data access and smoother performance. This results in a 13% boost in single-core performance and up to 40% in multi-core, while also improving power efficiency by 40%.

The GPU has also been significantly upgraded, adding advanced ray tracing and 3D memory engines for a next-gen gaming experience. These improvements represent a substantial leap in both performance and visual quality.

The chipset includes the MediaTek Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), which supports modern AI models including LLMs, SLMs, and LMMs. It also features the NPU 880, enabling powerful generative AI and smart camera features. Gamers can expect top-tier frame rates with improved power efficiency. The chip also supports 4K60 HDR (HLG) video recording with ultra-stable footage through a multi-frame EIS engine. Its Imagiq 1080 image processor features in-sensor zoom and QPD remosaic for enhanced image quality.

Other features include support for 5G-A with up to 3CC-CA and speeds reaching 5.17Gbps, as well as the ability to power WQHD+ displays at 144Hz and support dual-screen setups—making it an ideal chipset for premium, feature-rich smartphones.

OPPO Reno 14 Pro: Expected Specs

The upcoming OPPO Reno 14 Pro, powered by the Dimensity 8450 chipset, is expected to feature up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. The phone may sport a 6.83-inch OLED display with 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.
