Reddit faced a widespread outage on December 19, with tens of thousands of US users reporting access problems across mobile and web; however, the company did not confirm what caused the disruption.
According to Downdetector, Reddit complaints began to spike around 4:00 PM EST on December 19, indicating a major disruption affecting users across the US and signalling a significant service issue.
Over 40,000 users reported issues on Downdetector at the peak of the disruption, with most problems on the Reddit app and others affecting the website and server connections.
Data shows 53% of users faced app issues, 37% had website problems, and 10% experienced server connection errors. Many took to X (formerly twitter) to share failed feed loads and other errors.
Despite widespread user complaints, Reddit’s official service status page yesterday showed “No incidents reported today”; however, the platform is currently functioning normally now.
Meanwhile, users turned to X to express frustrations, sharing error screenshots and failed feed refreshes. Many asked if Reddit was down, while others speculated about unusual reasons for the disruption.
This is not Reddit’s first disruption. On December 8, a global outage affected over 250 users. Website and app problems mirrored the latest December 19 incident, while server issues continued to impact some users.
