Several parts of Delhi are likely to face water shortage as Delhi Jal Board (DJB) announced a major drop in water production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants. The drop is due to a sharp fall in raw water supply, officials confirmed on Friday.
The water level at the Wazirabad pond has fallen to 668.70 feet, below the normal 674.50 feet. This sharp dip is affecting water treatment at the Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla plants, leading to supply disruptions, as reported by PTI.
Parts of Delhi likely to face shortages include South Extension, Greater Kailash, Jahangirpuri, Moolchand, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmere Gate ISBT, NDMC zone, ITO, Defence Colony, CGO Complex, Rajghat, WHO, Ramleela Ground and Delhi Gate.
Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj, additional NDMC zones and parts of the Cantonment area are also expected to face water shortages.
DJB says raw water supply to Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants has dropped sharply, forcing a 25–30% cut in potable water production. This is likely to worsen shortages across several Delhi areas.
The Wazirabad plant usually produces 131 MGD and Chandrawal 94 MGD. Reduced output at both facilities is expected to severely impact Delhi’s overall water supply in the coming days.
Delhi needs about 1,290 MGD of water, a number that rises in summer. DJB's current capacity is only 990–1,000 MGD. With pond levels dropping, output has fallen by 70–100 MGD, deepening the city’s water crisis.
Amid the ongoing shortage, DJB has urged residents to conserve water. Tankers are being sent on request through helpline 1916. Officials haven’t confirmed when full supply will be restored.
