Mumbai has enforced Level 4 measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) after several areas recorded very poor and severe pollution levels, triggering strict citywide controls to reduce emissions and stabilise air quality.
Pollution levels in Mazgaon, Deonar, Malad, Borivali East, Chakala-Andheri East, Navy Nagar, Powaia and Mulund rose to unsafe categories, prompting authorities to enforce focused restrictions in these high-risk neighbourhoods.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended construction and other dust-generating activities in the impacted areas, serving stop-work orders to more than 50 sites to prevent further decline in already worsening air quality.
Small industries such as bakeries and marble-cutting units were directed to adopt cleaner operating methods or risk penalties, forming a key part of the city’s push to control dust and emissions.
Flying squads with engineers and police teams, backed by GPS-enabled vehicles, have been stationed across all wards to track emissions, check violations and ensure strict compliance with pollution control measures.
Despite clear skies and a mild winter breeze offering a pleasant start to Monday, a persistent layer of haze and smog continued to impact visibility across Mumbai, reflecting the city’s worsening air quality.
AQI.in recorded Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index at 277, with industrial and traffic-heavy areas like Wadala Truck Terminal, Chembur, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Worli and Deonar showing severe PM2.5 pollution levels.
