Orange and yellow alerts are in place as intense heat and humidity grip several states. The IMD says fading western disturbances have left behind moisture, making conditions even more uncomfortable. With the monsoon still delayed in northwest India, relief is nowhere in sight.
On Tuesday, Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season at 43.8°C — 3.6°C above normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert till Wednesday, warning of very hot weather and a continuing heatwave.
According to the IMD, temperatures are expected to reach 45°C on Wednesday, with warm nights around 29°C. Some relief is likely from June 12, with light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) forecast in parts of the capital.
Western Rajasthan is reeling under a severe heatwave, with Ganganagar recording over 47°C for two days straight. The IMD has issued a red alert for June 11–12, and an orange alert for June 13. Eastern Rajasthan is under a yellow alert on the same day.
Thunderstorms are likely in Rajasthan on June 15 and 16, offering a brief respite from the ongoing heatwave. Eastern parts of the state may see a significant dip in temperatures between June 18 and 20, as stormy conditions are expected to persist.
Ludhiana is under a yellow alert for heatwave conditions from Tuesday to Thursday. On Monday, the city recorded a high of 44°C. IMD expects temperatures to remain above 40°C until June 16, offering little immediate relief.
According to IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul, there are some chances of light thunderstorms or rain at isolated spots. While not widespread, this activity could bring temperatures closer to normal levels in the coming days.
Even the hills aren’t cool anymore. Una sizzled at 44.2°C on Tuesday, while popular hill stations like Shimla and Manali recorded temperatures well above their usual range. The MeT office has hinted at possible light showers on June 13 and 14.
IMD has advised people to stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure, and take precautions against heatstroke.
