Domain Shift Alert

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formely twitter) has said it will discontinue the use of the Twitter domain from November 10. While the move won’t impact most users, those using two-factor authentication may lose access if they don’t update their settings before the deadline.

Who’s Affected ?

The update primarily impacts users who use hardware security keys or passkeys for two-factor authentication. They need to re-enrol their credentials on X.com before November 10 to keep their accounts accessible and avoid being locked out.

Company Clarifies Reason

According to X, the update is unrelated to any security concern. The shift only impacts Yubikeys and passkeys since they were previously linked to Twitter.com and must now be re-enrolled under the new X.com domain.

What Happens After Deadline?

If users fail to re-enrol before November 10, their X accounts will be locked. They can regain access by re-registering a security key, switching to another two-factor authentication (2FA) method, or disabling the feature entirely.

How to Re-enrol?

To update their credentials, users should open the X app or website, head to Settings, and follow Privacy → Security → Account Access → Two-Factor Authentication. From there, they can add or re-register their existing passkey under the X.com domain.

Recovery After Lockout

If an account gets locked, users can recover it by re-registering their security key, choosing another two-factor authentication method, or temporarily turning off two-factor verification before reactivating it under the X.com domain.

Musk’s Long Term Vision

Elon Musk acquired the platform in late 2023 and rebranded it as X, fulfilling a vision he had nurtured for nearly 20 years. The move reflected his long-standing ambition to bring the X.com brand back to life.
