President Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to move iPhone production from India to the US, aiming to boost domestic manufacturing and job creation.
Analysts warn that producing iPhones in the US could raise the price from $1,000 to $3,000 due to higher labor and operational costs.
The significant price hike may affect consumer demand, as the higher costs could make iPhones less accessible to a broader market.
Apple has assured the Indian government that there will be no change in its investment plans in the country as reported by ANI.
India is a competitive hub for smartphone manufacturing, said Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, amid Apple’s ongoing expansion and investment in the country.
Prashant Girbane, Director General of MCCIA, told ANI that manufacturing iPhones in the US could triple their price, questioning if American consumers are ready to pay $3,000.
Trump has long pushed Apple to manufacture iPhones in the US instead of India, renewing the demand during a recent rally as part of his 2024 presidential campaign.
