The 2025 Global Firepower report reveals which countries have the largest combat tank fleets. As global tensions rise, several nations are rapidly expanding their armored strength to dominate on land.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending jumped 37% between 2015 and 2025, including a sharp 9.4% rise just last year, signaling aggressive defense buildup worldwide.
With rising defence spending, the world moves closer to a new arms race. The global nuclear arsenal in January 2025 was estimated at 12,241 warheads, of which 9,614 were in active military stockpiles and ready for potential deployment.
With an estimated 6,800 tanks, China has the world’s largest combat tank fleet. The country continues to modernize its military rapidly as part of broader global ambitions.
Russia ranks second with 5,750 tanks. Its Cold War legacy and vast land force infrastructure help maintain a strong tank fleet.
The United States holds 4,640 tanks, focusing on fewer but more technologically advanced armored units. Its fleet supports global military operations.
North Korea ranks fourth with 4,344 tanks. While many are older Soviet-era models, the sheer volume shows the country’s strong emphasis on military deterrence.
India stands fifth globally with 4,201 tanks. As regional tensions grow, India continues to upgrade its armored capabilities to strengthen land defense.
In 2025, Egypt (3,976), Pakistan (3,742), South Korea (2,847), Turkey (2,229), and Iran (2,126) ranked just behind the top five countries. These nations continue to strengthen their armoured forces as part of broader military strategies.
