Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 17 August 2025, inaugurated two major road projects in Delhi-NCR – Urban Extension Road-II and the Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway. Together, they represent a ₹11,000 crore investment aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving overall commuter mobility.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the new road projects will significantly improve commuting across Delhi-NCR. He emphasised that modern connectivity in the capital showcases India’s development, noting that travel has become far easier in the past 11 years due to focused infrastructure efforts.
The 75-km six-lane Urban Extension Road-II semi-circles western Delhi, linking NH 44 to Delhi-Gurugram Expressway on NH-48. The Alipur-Dichaon Kalan segment now offers direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, supporting smoother city traffic and industrial transport.
Officials said the new road network can cut travel time from Indira Gandhi International Airport to southwest and northwest Delhi by 40–60%, significantly easing congestion on Inner and Outer Ring Roads and critical choke points like Dhaula Kuan.
The 10.1-km Delhi stretch of Dwarka Expressway, costing ₹5,360 crore, connects Shiv Murti to Dwarka Sector-21 and Delhi-Haryana border. This section integrates with Urban Extension Road-II and improves access to Metro lines, Yashobhoomi, Bijwasan railway station, and Dwarka Bus Depots.
The Dwarka Expressway Delhi stretch is split into two segments: 5.9 km from Shiv Murti to Dwarka Sector-21 underpass, and 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 to Delhi-Haryana border, enabling seamless connectivity with other major highways in the region.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also attended the inauguration. Officials highlighted that Haryana stands to gain significantly, while commuters in Delhi can expect up to a 50% reduction in traffic congestion.
The government said that waste was recycled and trees were transplanted during the construction of these projects. These measures showcase a focus on sustainable infrastructure, balancing environmental protection with modernisation and improved urban transport across Delhi-NCR.
