The Monsoon Session of Parliament kicks off today, July 21, with the Opposition’s INDIA bloc ready to confront Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on key national issues.
Scheduled from July 21 to August 21, the Monsoon Session will include 21 sittings. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will be adjourned from August 12 to 17 for Independence Day, and will resume proceedings on August 18.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that 17 items, including 15 bills, are scheduled for the Monsoon Session. He added that the government is open to discussions on key issues like Operation Sindoor—India’s precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 tourists.
The government has listed over 15 bills for introduction and passage in the Monsoon Session. These include the Income Tax Bill, 2025, and the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (GST) Amendment Bill. Other proposals include the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025.
Additional bills lined up include amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Act to add IIM Guwahati, and several maritime-related bills including Coastal Shipping Bill, Merchant Shipping Bill, and the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, among others. Also on the agenda are proposed reforms on doping, mining, and sports governance among others.
The Parliament will also discuss and vote on the Demands for Grants for Manipur for the financial year 2025–26. It will also consider and pass the related Appropriation Bill during this Monsoon Session.
A resolution will be taken up seeking approval to extend President’s Rule in Manipur. This follows the Proclamation issued by President Droupadi Murmu on 13 February 2025 under Article 356 (1) of the Constitution of India.
Opposition parties have demanded that PM Modi respond to Operation Sindoor and to US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, apart from calling for a debate on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said the final decision on discussion topics will be taken by the Business Advisory Committees of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
PM Narendra Modi is set to visit the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to 26, where he will hold key bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening strategic, economic and regional ties with both nations.
