From March 20, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will implement a new system for the H-1B visa programme, replacing the previous application process.
The change in the registration system is designed to improve transparency and efficiency while streamlining the selection of H-1B recipients.
The old system allowed multiple employers to submit applications for the same candidate. The new selection process claims that all candidates will get an equal chance, regardless of how many employers apply on their behalf.
The registration fee will increase from $10 to $215 per entry, substantially raising expenses for companies submitting multiple applications.
Employers must now electronically register candidates before filing a full H-1B petition. This update is designed to simplify the process and reduce paperwork.
With the new system, USCIS will select beneficiaries instead of applications, eliminating duplicate entries and reducing the advantage larger companies previously had by submitting multiple registrations for a single candidate.
The H-1B visa is a U.S. work visa that allows employers to hire foreign professionals in specialised fields such as IT, engineering, finance and healthcare.
The H-1B visa process starts with employer registration followed by a lottery of applications exceeding the cap. Employers of the selected candidates then file petitions for USCIS review. Once approved, the candidates secure a visa and can legally work in the US.
