Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on March 8 introduced a new Aadhaar mobile application aimed at simplifying and securing identity verification for Indian citizens. The new Aadhaar app, currently in its final testing phase, is expected to roll out nationwide soon.
The app will enables instant verification through QR codes and real-time Face ID authentication — eliminating the need to carry physical Aadhaar cards or photocopies for routine verifications. Once live, users will be able to verify their identity simply by scanning a QR code and confirming with a face scan.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the app, calling it a “game-changer” for digital identity in India and part of the Digital India push. "No need to hand over Aadhaar photocopy at hotel receptions, shops or during travel. The Aadhaar App is secure and shareable only with the user's consent. 100 per cent digital and secure," the Minister said.
Similar to how UPI QR codes have revolutionized digital payments, Aadhaar QR codes are expected to be placed at common "points of authentication" like airports, hotels, shops, and public services, allowing users to prove their identity without the physical card or photocopy.
The app was unveiled during the third "Aadhaar Samvaad" series hosted by UIDAI in Delhi. S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said Aadhaar is allowing speed up inclusion and aiding economic growth. He said Aadhaar is a sophisticated system that preserves privacy and authenticates identity.
The UIDAI held a day-long stakeholder meeting in New Delhi to explore ways to improve service delivery using Aadhaar. Inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the 'Aadhaar Samvaad' conference brought together around 750 policymakers, experts, and industry leaders.
