At a press briefing with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele on April 14, 2025, Trump paused in midway to reflect on his vocabulary, calling “tariff” his fifth favorite word. The statement was met with laughter and curiosity from reporters.
“Tariff is a beautiful word,” Trump said. “It’s actually my fifth favorite word, just so you understand. I love the word tariff,” he added while talking about economic policy.
When asked why “tariff” ranked so high, Trump said, “It’s not like family or God or us. But in terms of economic development, it’s the most beautiful word in the dictionary.”
In 2017, Trump tweeted, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe” — a phrase that was never explained but instantly went viral and became a pop culture moment. Trump later tweet a post on this by saying “Who can figure out the true meaning of covfefe? Enjoy!”
Trump repeatedly said what sounded like “bigly” in his campaign speeches. While some believe he meant “big league,” the term became widely mocked and quoted.
Trump often called the Mueller investigation and other probes a “rigged witch hunt,” using the phrase to discredit legal scrutiny against him.
Throughout the 2020 campaign, Trump regularly referred to Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe,” aiming to portray his opponent as mentally and physically unfit.
While Trump only revealed “tariff” as his fifth favorite, the public recalls many words he made famous, showing how language and leadership collided in his presidency.
