In a recent NBC interview, President-elect Donald Trump outlined his policy plans for his upcoming term, highlighting priorities such as immigration, foreign policy, social security, and tax reforms. His comments indicated that he intends to pursue ambitious and frequently controversial changes, starting from his first day in office.
Trump reaffirmed his tough stance on immigration, outlining plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, beginning with criminals. Additionally, he proposed ending birthright citizenship on his first day in office, signaling his push for a constitutional amendment to overhaul immigration laws.
Trump expressed a willingness to protect "Dreamers"—undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children—from deportation. He showed openness to working with Democrats on a legislative solution to allow Dreamers to stay in the country legally while reiterating his commitment to enforcing stricter immigration policies.
Trump pledged to issue pardons on his first day in office for individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol attack. He criticized their treatment, calling it excessively harsh, and emphasized his intention to grant them pardons.
Trump reaffirmed his commitment to extending the tax cuts from his first term. He rejected proposals to raise the age requirements for Social Security and Medicare. Additionally, he expressed openness to raising the federal minimum wage, currently set at $7.25 per hour.
Trump confirmed that he would not impose restrictions on abortion pills, despite support for such measures among some conservatives. He also clarified that his children, Ivanka and Jared, would not hold official positions in his second term, and did not specify a role for his wife, Melania.
On foreign policy, Trump questioned the US' continued involvement in NATO, stating that it would depend on whether member countries "pay their bills." He also suggested that military aid to Ukraine might decrease under his administration while expressing a desire to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump criticised the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), promising to develop a better healthcare plan. His remarks provided a glimpse of the direction he intends to pursue if re-elected, emphasizing immigration, foreign policy, fiscal conservatism, and bringing the nation together, despite the political and legal challenges ahead.
