Chinese EV maker BYD has introduced a new charging platform designed to cut charging times bringing them on same level with the refueling speed of petrol and cars.
BYD' s founder Wang Chuanfu, introduced the Super e-platform during an event streamed from the company's Shenzhen headquarters, according to Reuters.
These models will be built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 which features a safer Blade Battery, and 8-in-1 powertrain with 89% efficiency and an aerodynamics design for better range. Its fast-charging system powers up to 80% in 10 mins enabling a 1,000 km drive.
The new platform features peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW) enabling EVs to add 400 km of range in just 5 minutes.
The new charging platform will debut in 2 upcoming BYD models the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV starting at approximately $37,400.
BYD sold 4.2 million vehicles in 2024 and aims to reach 5-6 million units in 2025. Investment in its own charging infrastructure reflects a push for greater independence in China's EV market.
This technology is twice as fast as Tesla's latest Superchargers which have a maximum output of 500 kW. The breakthrough seeks to address one of the biggest challenges in EV adoption charging time.
The company revealed plans to establish over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China to support it new platform.
