Bharat Taxi, India’s first government-backed ride-hailing platform, has launched nationwide on January 1, 2026. The app positions itself as a fairer alternative to private competitors such as Ola, Uber and Rapido.
The app is run by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, supported by eight leading cooperatives and financial institutions. The Ministry of Cooperation acts as the chief promoter of this driver-owned mobility platform.
Bharat Taxi is being promoted as the world’s first national ride-hailing cooperative fully owned by drivers. Already, more than 51,000 members from New Delhi and Saurashtra have joined, gaining ownership stakes and a share in profits.
Unlike private ride-hailing apps charging 20–30% per ride, Bharat Taxi does not take any commission. Drivers receive 100% of their fare, along with benefits like board representation, dividends, and cooperative profit shares.
The soft launch began earlier this month in Delhi and Gujarat. Riders can download the Bharat Taxi app, while drivers can download the Bharat Taxi Driver app on Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
Bharat Taxi offers multiple ride types similar to private platforms, including two-wheelers, rickshaws, taxis and four-wheelers. The service will be rolled out nationwide starting 1 January, providing widespread urban and rural mobility.
Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said the app will create new employment opportunities and contribute to rural prosperity, giving drivers a fairer income model and helping communities benefit from the cooperative structure.
The platform offers 24/7 customer support, live location tracking, driver verification, and an enhanced safety framework developed with Delhi Police, ensuring secure rides for both passengers and drivers nationwide.
Drivers also receive insurance coverage and can display advertisements on their vehicles, adding extra income. Transparent fare pricing is implemented with no surge charges, ensuring fair treatment and financial stability for members.
