Banks in India will remain closed for 15 days in August 2025, including for national holidays like Independence Day, Janmashtami, and Ganesh Chaturthi, along with state-specific observances. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, closures also include all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays.
All banks in India, public and private, stay closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, along with all Sundays — these are fixed weekly offs. Here are the other RBI-listed holidays for August 2025, including major festivals and regional observances.
Banks across India will be closed on August 3 (Sunday) for the weekend. On August 8 (Friday), banks in Gangtok, Sikkim will remain shut for Tendong Lho Rum Faat, a local cultural and religious festival.
On August 9 (Saturday), banks across India will remain closed for the second Saturday. Additionally, banks in cities like Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Dehradun, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Shimla will also be shut for Raksha Bandhan and Jhulana Purnima.
Banks will remain closed across India on August 10 (Sunday) for the weekend. On August 13 (Wednesday), banks in Manipur will close for Patriot’s Day. August 15 (Friday) marks a nationwide holiday for Independence Day, Parsi New Year, and Janmashtami.
On August 16 (Saturday), banks will remain closed in multiple cities including Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Ranchi, Chennai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Patna, Lucknow, and others due to Janmashtami (Shravan Vad-8) and Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.
Banks across India will be closed on August 17 (Sunday), 23, and 24 for the weekend offs (Sunday and fourth Saturday). On August 19 (Tuesday), banks in Agartala, Tripura will remain shut to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.
On August 25 (Monday), banks in Guwahati will be closed for Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva. Then on August 27 (Wednesday), several cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Panaji, and others will observe a bank holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi and other regional festivals.
Banks in Bhubaneshwar and Panaji will remain shut on August 28 (Thursday) for the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi and Nuakhai. Finally, banks across India will close on August 31 (Sunday) for the regular weekend holiday.
When banks are shut, digital services like UPI, mobile apps, and ATMs work normally. But transactions involving cheques or demand drafts are paused. That’s because the Negotiable Instruments Act, under which RBI declares bank holidays, covers instruments that need manual clearing—so those services will resume only on working days.
