Matt Garman, the CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), attended the re:Invent 2024 summit in Las Vegas to discuss Amazon's standing in the generative AI space, especially in relation to competitors such as Microsoft and Google
To reinforce the message, Garman was joined by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who made a surprise appearance at the re:Invent 2024 summit to announce a new generation of foundation models called Nova
Andy Jassy unveiled six variants in the Nova family of AI models: Nova Micro: A text-to-text model, Nova Lite: A multi-modal model that processes image, video, and text inputs, Nova Pro: A multi-modal model focusing on accuracy and speed, and Nova Premier: A multi-modal model, recognized as the best for handling complex reasoning tasks
Additionally, two specialized models were introduced: Nova Canvas - designed specifically for generating images, and Nova Reels: A video generation model capable of creating studio-quality videos ranging from 6 seconds to 2 minutes
Andy Jassy emphasized that the Nova models outperform current offerings from Google’s Gemini family, Microsoft’s ChatGPT, and Meta’s Llama models, positioning Amazon as a leader in the generative AI space
Jassy also revealed that image and video outputs generated by Nova models would be watermarked, ensuring traceability and helping to identify synthetic content, addressing growing concerns around content authenticity
Looking ahead, Jassy mentioned that Amazon is working on developing AI models capable of processing prompts across multiple formats—text, images, audio, and video—and generating outputs in these formats as well
These foundation models will be integrated with Amazon Bedrock, AWS's platform that provides access to leading Gen AI models through a single API, simplifying the process for customers to access and implement these advanced AI capabilities
